2. How does Forest present nature in this poem? The following questions may help you to think of an answer.
(i) What are the birds that are usually named in poems? Do you think a crow is often mentioned in poems? What images come to your mind when you think of a crow?
(ii) Again, what is “a hemlock tree”? Why doesn’t the poet write about a more ‘beautiful’ tree such as a maple, or an oak, or a pine?
(iii) What do the ‘crow’ and ‘hemlock’ represent – joy or sorrow? What does the dust of snow that the crow shakes off a hemlock tree stand for?
Ans: (i) Usually poet’s mention song birds and beautiful birds in their poems. They are, cuckoo, mynah, parrot, night angle, skylark etc. A crow is rarely mentioned. It is used in tragic situation. It indicates sadness. When I think of a crow I feel bad news will come to me.
(ii) A ‘hemlock ‘ tree is a poisonous tree with small white flowers. It suits the crow better. So the poet does not mention any other beautiful tree.
(iii) The ‘crow’ and the ‘hemlock’ represent sadness and the negative aspect. But the dust of snow indicates pleasure. So the dust of snow falling on the poet shaken off by a crow from the hemlock tree indicates that sadness is leaving and pleasant time is coming.
3. Have there been times when you experienced a similar moment that changed your mood that day?
Ans: Once I felt depressed when my father hurt his knee. But soon I was relieved as I come to know that he got a promotion. The good news changed my mood completely.
