Thinking about the poem:

1. (i) what does sandburg think the fog is like? 

Ans: sandburg thinks the fog is like a cat sitting on silent haunches. 

(ii) How does the fog come? 

Ans:  The fog comes silently.

(iii) What does ‘it’ in the third line refer to? 

Ans:  In the third line ‘it’ refers to the fog that comes on little cat feet. 

(iv)  Does the poet actually say that the fog is like a cat? Find three things that tell us that the fog is like a cat. 

Ans: The poet does not actually say that the fog is like a cat. But he says that the fog comes in the manner a cat comes silently. 

The three things are:

(i) The fog comes silently 

(ii) The fog sits on silent haunches. 

(iii) The fog moves on.

                         Destroyed  habitation 

                         With its destructive hands

                         roaring as loud as thunder. 

                         Boldly it went away leaving 

                         a lifeless scene.
