Reading With Insight
1. “I’ve done something; oh God! I’ve done something real at last.” Why does Andrew say this? What does it mean?
Ans: Andrew said this to himself as he walked out of the Morgan’s house after a night long ordeal. Joe and Susan Morgan had been expecting their first child after twenty years of marriage. He had assured everyone that things would be fine. However, they did not turn out fine as promised. After an hour’s struggle, a child was born, without life. The mother was pulseless. Instinctively, he first saved the mother and then turned to the child. Using a technique he had witnessed earlier, he could somehow, after a relentless struggle, bring the child back to life. This brought about the feeling of having done something real at last.
It means he could put his knowledge and experience to practise and save lives. His state of despair was relegated to the background by a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction. His heroic efforts resulted in nothing less than a miracle.
2. There lies a great difference between textbook medicine and the world of a practising physician. Discuss.
Ans: Theoretical knowledge is useless unless put into practice. A practising physician often has to rely on his experience and analytical powers to treat a patient. As in the case of Susan, the doctor had to use a very unconventional method which he had once practically seen before. The textbook enumerates the symptoms of a particular illness, but at times the symptoms may belie the theoretically established disease. Every patient is an individual being. It is not possible for the textbook to have studied each of them. Only a practising physician can study and know what the ailment could be and decide on the line of treatment.
3. Do you know of any incident when someone has been brought back to life from the brink of death through medical help? Discuss medical procedures such as organ transplant and organ regeneration that are used to save human life.
Ans: I have heard of a person in our family who had undergone a kidney transplant. He was around twenty four years of age when both his kidneys failed to function. He was immediately taken to a specialised hospital. But the problem arose when a matching donor was not found. Time was running out. They even put an advertisement in the newspaper. At last the matching was successful with a donor and the transplant was done. It has been almost ten years now and he is doing fine on a donated kidney.
Organ transplant is the practice of taking a body organ or part from one individual and planting it in another who is in dire need of it. Organs such as kidney, liver, heart are commonly transplanted. Bone marrow transplant also becomes necessary for people with cancer. Organ regeneration is replacing a part of the body, which has been damaged or lost, and getting its tissues to grow again.

1. Who was Andrew Manson? Where was he returning from? Why was Joe Morgan waiting for him?
Ans: Andrew Manson was a doctor newly out of medical college. He had begun his medical practice as an assistant to Dr Edward Page in a small Welsh mining town of Blaenelly. He was returning from a disappointing evening with Christine, the girl he was in love with.
Joe Morgan was pacing up and down his house awaiting his return. His wife Susan was to deliver their first child after twenty years of marriage. She was in distress and had called for the doctor.
2. ‘After all that he had promised! Who is ‘he’ referred to here? What had he promised and to whom?
Ans: He is Dr Andrew Manson who had come for Mrs Morgan’s delivery. After an hour of intense struggle, a child was born to Mrs Morgan. But it was without life.
When Joe Morgan had stopped outside the door, he told the doctor that he knew he would do well for the family. Inside, Susan’s mother said they were all desperately hoping for this child. The doctor had assured them all that there would be no reason to worry. He would take care of everything. Thus, he was horrified when the child was born still and the mother was on the verge of collapse.
3. Describe Andrew Manson’s frantic efforts to save the child. Were his efforts successful?
Ans: Andrew pulled out the perfectly formed baby from beneath the bed where the nurse had kept it. The body was warm, limp, white and soft. He realised the baby was suffocated due to lack of oxygen in blood. He urgently ordered for basins of hot and cold water. Remembering a similar case of unconventional treatment, he dipped the baby alternately in hot and cold water and then repeatedly pumped the chest hard with both hands. In a miraculous, turn of events, the child’s chest heaved and it let out a cry. His frantic and feverish efforts were successful.
4. Through horror, desperation and hopelessness, Andrew reached satisfaction and fulfilment like never before. How was it possible?
Ans: Andrew was horrified at the unfortunate turn of events. Between a lifeless child and a listless mother, Andrew made an instant decision to save the mother first and struggled on it. He injected a medicine and steadied her heartbeat. Turning to the child, he knew it had suffered lack of oxygen in the blood. From his practical experience, he tried an unconventional method to save the child. Even under a desperate sense of defeat and hopelessness, Andrew persisted and revived an almost lifeless child. It was a miracle, and it happened in his hands. It brought him a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction like never before.

3. How were these thoughts related to Christine?
Ans: Andrew was in love with Christine and believed their marriage would be peaceful and pleasant. But his practical, doubting mind was in conflict with his emotional heart. It left him confused and resentful.
4. What did Susan’s mother fear? How did Andrew reassure her?

5. What were the sounds that Andrew heard in the stillness of the night?
Ans: As he sat by the fireplace, he could hear the crackling of the burnt coal and wood in the fire, the slow ticking of the wall clock and Joe Morgan’s footsteps as he walked up and down in the street outside.
6. What different course did the old woman’s thoughts take?
Ans: While Andrew was lost in thoughts of his relationship with Christine, the old woman was thinking about her daughter and the unborn child. She said Susan did not want to be given chloroform as it might harm the baby.
7. How did Andrew react when the child was born lifeless?
Ans: Andrew was horrified at the sight of a lifeless child. His face turned cold. He had promised the family that all would be fine. He was in a terrible dilemma.

Ans: The midwife placed the child under the bed among the wet newspapers. She was sure the baby was stillborn and lifeless and had no chance of revival and thus placed it there.
10. How did the baby look when Andrew pulled it from under the bed?
Ans: It was a perfectly formed baby boy. The warm body was limp, white and soft. The skin was smooth and tender. The limbs seemed boneless and the head hung on the thin neck.
11. What, according to Andrew, was wrong with the child? What did he do?
Ans: As he looked at the child with an exhausted frown, he realised that the whiteness could mean that the baby had suffered suffocation due to lack of oxygen in the blood. He resorted to a treatment he had seen before.
12. How did the old woman and the midwife react to the child’s first cry?
Ans: At the first sign of life on a seemingly stillborn baby, the midwife sobbed hysterically and thanked God. The old woman stood against the wall, hands together and lips moved in prayer.
13. Justify the title ‘Birth’.
Ans: The title ‘Birth’ is very appropriate as it revolves round the birth of a child. Along with the miraculous survival of the lifeless baby, it was also the birth of confidence and commitment to Andrew Manson’s profession.
