Ans: Hari Singh believed in the beginning that if he could read and write like an educated man there would be no limit of his achievements. But later his reactions to the prospect of education changed. After stealing anil’s money he began thinking. He thought he would be able to get more than a few hundred rupees if he learned whole sentences. Here, money because less important to him. He believed education could make him big, clever and respected. He knew anil was the man who could make him realise his aim. And so to become educated he returned to anil.

2. Why does not anil hand the thief over to the police? Do you think most people would have done so? In what ways is anil different from such employers?

Ans: Anil does not hand the thief over to the police because he is a large – hearted man. He knew that hari Singh was a thief. Still he kept him. His real love to the thief roused in hari Singh the real man. Anil knew that hari Singh wanted to give up stealing and for that only had returned to him. So he took the matter easily. He knew if the thief was sent to police he would never be corrected, rather he would be a criminal.

But most people would not have done so. Anil is different from most people and succeeded is reforming a thief by dint of his kindness, sympathy and love.

Ans: I think people like anil and hari Singh are found not only in fiction but also in real life. But there are few such people.

2. Do you think it a significant detail in the story that anil is a struggling writer? Dose this explain his behaviour in any way?

Ans: certainly, it is a significant detail in the story that anil is a struggling writer. He has no regular income. But he has a big heart. As soon as he gets money he spends lavishly. He is not money centric. Such people are the real wealth of the nation.

3. Have you met anyone like hari Singh? Can you think and imagine the circumstances that can turn a fifteen-year – old boy into a thief?

Ans: Boys like hari Singh can be seen here and there. There are many instances that circumstances turn teenagers into thieves.

4. Where is the story set? (you can get clues from the names of the persons and places mentioned in it) which language or languages are spoken in these places? Do you think the characters in the story spoke to each other in English?

Ans: The story is set in a place that is connected with railway and having a railway station. The place is a town and lucknow is not a very long way from it. The name’ jumna sweet shop’ says that hindi, english and other Indian languages are spoken here.

The characters in the stroy do not use English when they speak to each other.
