1. Discuss the aims of the UNO for which it came into existence and also discuss its principles.

Ans: The aims/Objectives of the United Nations Organization (UNO) are:

(a) To maintain international peace and security across the globe.

(b) To foster friendly relations among nations based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and the right to self-determination.

(c) To promote international cooperation in addressing economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian issues, ensuring that every individual enjoys basic human rights and fundamental freedoms.

(d) To serve as a central platform for building strong and harmonious relations among nations through dialogue, diplomacy, and collaboration.

Principles of the United Nations Organization (UNO):

(a)  The UNO is founded on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its member states.

(b) All member countries are expected to fulfill their obligations in accordance with the UN Charter.

(c) Disputes between member states should be resolved through peaceful means, ensuring global peace, security, and justice are not compromised.

(d) Members must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

(e) Member nations are obligated to support the UNO in its actions and must not assist any state against which the UNO is taking enforcement action.

2. Write a note on the Security Council of the UNO.

Ans: The Security Council is the most powerful organ of the United Nations. It originally had 11 members (5 permanent and 6 temporary), but after a 1963 amendment, the number of temporary members increased to 10. The 5 permanent members are the USA, UK, France, Russia, and China. To pass any important resolution, at least 9 members, including all 5 permanent ones, must agree. Each permanent member has veto power, meaning a single ‘no’ vote from any of them can block a decision.

3. Discuss the steps taken by the UNO on world peace.

Ans: The steps taken by the UNO on world peace are:

(a) Disarmament Initiatives: To reduce the threat of war, the UNO took several significant steps toward disarmament. In 1952, it established the Disarmament Commission. Over the years, it helped implement major treaties like the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (1963), the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (1968), and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (START I and II). These agreements helped control the spread and testing of nuclear weapons, contributing greatly to global peace efforts.

(b)  Preventive Diplomacy: In 2007, the UNO adopted the concept of Preventive Diplomacy. This strategy focuses on resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiation before they escalate into violent conflict. It has played a crucial role in peacefully managing many tense situations around the world.

4. Write a note regarding National Human Rights Commission in India.

Ans: The NHRC of India was established on 28 September 1993 through a Presidential ordinance, following international encouragement by the UNO for all member states to form human rights bodies. It was formalized as the Human Rights Protection Act, 1993, on 8 January 1994.

The Commission aims to protect and promote human rights in India. It includes a retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as the Chairman, along with other judicial members and human rights experts. Chairpersons of the National Commissions for Minorities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Women are also members.

Appointed by the President of India for five years, the NHRC investigates human rights violations and submits reports and recommendations to the government for action. It functions as a watchdog for safeguarding human rights in the country.

5. Discuss the steps taken by the UNO regarding Human Rights.

Ans: The United Nations Organisation (UNO) has played a vital role in promoting and protecting human rights across the world. It has consistently emphasised the importance of human rights, international cooperation, and a peaceful environment among its member nations.

On 10 December 1948, the General Assembly of the UNO adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the support of 48 member states. This landmark document was created to ensure that every individual can live a life of dignity and freedom.

The main objectives of the Human Rights Declaration are:

(i) To safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals as outlined in the Declaration.

(ii) To urge all member states to acknowledge and implement these rights within their jurisdictions.

Through this declaration, the UNO made it clear that true international peace and security cannot be achieved if human rights are denied. As a result, 10 December is celebrated every year as International Human Rights Day to honour this commitment.
