Answer the following questions:

(a) What is civilization?

Ans: Civilization refers to a developed stage of human society. It includes social, economic and cultural development of human beings. It is characterized by permanent settlement, agriculture, trade, art, architecture and administration.

(b) Mention the characteristics of civilization.

Ans: There are certain specific characteristics of a civilization. These characteristics are:

(i) Availability of raw materials like stone, metal, wood, etc. These helped in the production and management of industrial goods.

(ii) There were economic relations amongst the neighbouring areas, this led to the establishment of effective internal and external trade with different regions.

(iii) Reliable data bearing witness to that civilization are still available.

(iv) Reflection of human life through creative activities, such as written literature, inscriptions, plaques etc.

(v) There were prosperous villages that could supply food and other commodities to the villages as well as cities through a proper agricultural system.

(c) Which civilization developed along the banks of River Nile?

Ans: The Egyptian Civilization developed along the banks of River Nile.

(d) Name any two ancient civilizations.

Ans: Indus Valley Civilization and Egyptian Civilization.

Textual Question Answers:

1. “Ancient civilizations were built on the banks of rivers.” What do you think is the reason for this? (Teacher will divide the students into groups to discuss and write about this)

Ans: Ancient civilizations developed near rivers because rivers provided many advantages for human life.

(i) Rivers supplied water for drinking and daily use.

(ii) They helped in agriculture and irrigation.

(iii) Rivers provided fertile soil for farming.

(iv) They were useful for transportation and trade.

(v) People could also get fish and other food from rivers.

Because of these reasons, people preferred to settle near rivers and build civilizations there.

2. “About 4700 years ago an urban civilization flourished on the banks of the Indus River”. Draw a timeline and indicate this time period on it in terms of BC. The teacher will explain the concepts of AD and BC to the students. 

Ans: Present year = 2025

2025 − 4700 = 2675 BC

So, this period can be written as 2675 BC.

This timeline shows that the Harappan Civilization began around 2675 BC, which is about 4700 years ago.
