(a) What is environment?

Ans: The environment refers to everything that surrounds us on the Earth. It includes both living and non-living things. Plants, animals, human beings, air, water, soil, landforms, and climate together form the environment. The non-living part of the environment is mainly divided into atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere, which support life on Earth.

(b) What are the different types of environment? Write with examples.

Ans: The environment is mainly classified into two types:

(i) Natural environment: This environment includes all elements that occur naturally without human interference. Mountains, forests, rivers, oceans, sunlight, air, soil, plants, and animals are examples of the natural environment.

(ii) Man-made environment: Humans use natural resources to meet their needs and create various structures. The surroundings created due to human activities are called the man-made environment. Examples include buildings, roads, factories, parks, bridges, and schools.

(c) What are the main components of Environment?

Ans: The environment is made up of two major components:

(i) Biotic components: These include all living organisms such as plants, animals, humans, bacteria, and fungi. They exist only within the biosphere and depend on one another for survival.

(ii) Abiotic components: These consist of non-living elements like air, water, and land. Air forms the atmosphere, water forms the hydrosphere, and land forms the lithosphere. These components support life by providing essential conditions.

(d) How is the man – made environment formed?

Ans: Human beings depend on nature for their daily needs. While using natural resources, they make changes to the surroundings. These changes result in the creation of a modified environment. The environment developed through human activities for comfort and development is known as the man-made environment.
