(a) Is consumer awareness necessary? Give two reasons to support your answer.

Ans: Yes, consumer awareness is necessary.

(i) Consumer awareness helps consumers to protect themselves from being cheated by dishonest sellers.

(ii) It helps consumers to know about their rights, duties and the correct price, quality and quantity of goods and services.

(b) What are the various methods of cheating consumers?

Ans: Consumers are cheated in various ways such as:

  • by not weighing properly
  • by selling adulterated commodities
  • by providing low quality commodities and services
  • by not issuing receipts and mentioning exact amount of sold goods and services
  • by removing original date of manufacture and putting false dates
  • by putting new price tags on original price
  • by duplicating trade marks
  • by duplicating commodities of branded companies
  • by not delivering goods on time ordered through postal, telephone and internet

(c) What are your duties as a consumer? What things would you look into while buying things?

Ans: As a consumer, my duties are to be aware and cautious while purchasing goods and services.While buying things, I would look into:

  • Quality, price, weight and purity of commodities.
  • Expiry date and MRP.
  • Trade marks like AGMARK, ISI, HALLMARK, FPO.
  • Weighing tools.
  • Receipt with full details.
  • Guarantee or warranty of goods.

(d) What is consumer right? Briefly discuss some consumer rights.

Ans: Consumer rights are the rights provided by the government to protect consumers from exploitation.

Some consumer rights are:

  • Right to speak on price, weight, purity and quality of purchased goods.
  • Right to form consumer forum.
  • Right to lodge complaint in consumer forums or consumer court.
  • Right to approach consumer protection act.
  • Right to demand punishment against dishonest merchants.
  • Right to consumer education.

(e) Briefly discuss about the measures taken by government for consumer protection.

Ans: The government has taken various measures for consumer protection.

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 was enacted to protect consumers.

Consumer Protection Councils were formed at Central, State and District levels.

Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions were established to resolve consumer disputes.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority was formed to prevent unfair trade practices and impose penalties on fake advertisements.

2. Write short notes:

(a) Consumer Protection Act.

Ans: The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 was enacted in India from 9th August 2019. The issue of consumer protection will now be looked into by the new act instead of the earlier Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The act protects the consumer by resolving disputes at district, state and national levels. It provides for the formation of Consumer Protection Councils and Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions to safeguard consumer rights.

(b) Consumer awareness.

Ans: Consumer awareness means being conscious about the rights, duties and responsibilities of consumers. An aware consumer can protect himself from being cheated. Consumer awareness helps in preventing unfair trade practices and exploitation by dishonest sellers.
