Ans: Andrew said this to himself as he walked out of the Morgan’s house after a night long ordeal. Joe and Susan Morgan had been expecting their first child after twenty years of marriage. He had assured everyone that things would be fine. However, they did not turn out fine as promised. After an hour’s struggle, a child was born, without life. The mother was pulseless. Instinctively, he first saved the mother and then turned to the child. Using a technique he had witnessed earlier, he could somehow, after a relentless struggle, bring the child back to life. This brought about the feeling of having done something real at last.

It means he could put his knowledge and experience to practise and save lives. His state of despair was relegated to the background by a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction. His heroic efforts resulted in nothing less than a miracle.

2. There lies a great difference between textbook medicine and the world of a practising physician. Discuss.

Ans: Theoretical knowledge is useless unless put into practice. A practising physician often has to rely on his experience and analytical powers to treat a patient. As in the case of Susan, the doctor had to use a very unconventional method which he had once practically seen before. The textbook enumerates the symptoms of a particular illness, but at times the symptoms may belie the theoretically established disease. Every patient is an individual being. It is not possible for the textbook to have studied each of them. Only a practising physician can study and know what the ailment could be and decide on the line of treatment.

3. Do you know of any incident when someone has been brought back to life from the brink of death through medical help? Discuss medical procedures such as organ transplant and organ regeneration that are used to save human life.

Ans: I have heard of a person in our family who had undergone a kidney transplant. He was around twenty four years of age when both his kidneys failed to function. He was immediately taken to a specialised hospital. But the problem arose when a matching donor was not found. Time was running out. They even put an advertisement in the newspaper. At last the matching was successful with a donor and the transplant was done. It has been almost ten years now and he is doing fine on a donated kidney.

Organ transplant is the practice of taking a body organ or part from one individual and planting it in another who is in dire need of it. Organs such as kidney, liver, heart are commonly transplanted. Bone marrow transplant also becomes necessary for people with cancer. Organ regeneration is replacing a part of the body, which has been damaged or lost, and getting its tissues to grow again.

1. Who was Andrew Manson? Where was he returning from? Why was Joe Morgan waiting for him?

Ans: Andrew Manson was a doctor newly out of medical college. He had begun his medical practice as an assistant to Dr Edward Page in a small Welsh mining town of Blaenelly. He was returning from a disappointing evening with Christine, the girl he was in love with.

Joe Morgan was pacing up and down his house awaiting his return. His wife Susan was to deliver their first child after twenty years of marriage. She was in distress and had called for the doctor.

2. ‘After all that he had promised! Who is ‘he’ referred to here? What had he promised and to whom?

Ans: He is Dr Andrew Manson who had come for Mrs Morgan’s delivery. After an hour of intense struggle, a child was born to Mrs Morgan. But it was without life.

When Joe Morgan had stopped outside the door, he told the doctor that he knew he would do well for the family. Inside, Susan’s mother said they were all desperately hoping for this child. The doctor had assured them all that there would be no reason to worry. He would take care of everything. Thus, he was horrified when the child was born still and the mother was on the verge of collapse.

3. Describe Andrew Manson’s frantic efforts to save the child. Were his efforts successful?

Ans: Andrew pulled out the perfectly formed baby from beneath the bed where the nurse had kept it. The body was warm, limp, white and soft. He realised the baby was suffocated due to lack of oxygen in blood. He urgently ordered for basins of hot and cold water. Remembering a similar case of unconventional treatment, he dipped the baby alternately in hot and cold water and then repeatedly pumped the chest hard with both hands.
