Ans: Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great social reformer of Bengal. He wanted to build a casteless society and was strongly against idol worship. In 1828 A.D., he founded the Brahmo Sabha, which later came to be known as the Brahmo Samaj in 1830 A.D. Later, Debendra Nath Thakur, the father of Rabindranath Thakur, joined the Brahmo Samaj.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy helped Lord William Bentinck in abolishing evil practices like sati and female infanticide. He worked for the education of women and supported widow remarriage. He also brought back educated Hindus who were declared outcasts into the Brahmo Samaj. His efforts played an important role in making Indian society liberal and progressive.
