1. Answer the following questions:

(a) The major landforms are found in which part of the world?

Ans: The major landforms are found on the Earth’s surface.

(b) Name the major terrestrial landforms.

Ans: The major landforms found on land are mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, rivers, and rocks.

(c) State the difference between mountains and plateaus.

Ans: Plateau regions are elevated lands with flat surfaces. These regions are rich in minerals, have forest resources, and agriculture is possible in some areas.

(f) Why is population sparse in mountainous region?

Ans: Population is sparse in mountainous regions due to uneven and steep land, cold climate, snowfall, hard living conditions, and difficult transportation.

2. Explain how hills and mountains help people.

Ans: Hills and mountains play an important role in supporting human life and livelihoods. Most of the world’s major rivers originate from the glaciers and streams of mountains. Therefore, mountains act as natural reservoirs of water which are useful for human use. In many places, dams are constructed across rivers and streams in the deep regions between mountain ranges to store water.

People practise terrace farming by cutting the slopes of mountains into steps and grow crops like paddy, wheat, potatoes, spinach and fruits. In some mountain regions, people practise ‘Jhum’ cultivation, which is a type of temporary cultivation.

Mountains are rich in flora and fauna. Forests in mountainous regions provide firewood, food, building materials, animal feed and medicinal plants to nearby inhabitants. Plants growing in mountains help in controlling temperature, wind and rainfall of the surrounding areas.

Some mountain regions have a healthy climate, so they are popular tourist destinations. Places like Mussoorie, Kulu, Manali, Shimla, Dehradun, Darjeeling and Shillong attract many tourists. Mountains are also used for adventure sports such as mountaineering and skiing.

Thus, hills and mountains help people in many ways, economically as well as environmentally.
