Here, glad means happy about something.

Glad, happy, pleased, delighted, thrilled and overjoyed are synonyms (words or expressions that have the same or nearly the same meaning.) However, they express happiness in certain ways.

Read the sentences below:

Q. II. Verbs of Reporting Study the following sentences.

The italicised words are verbs of reporting. We quote or report what someone has said or thought by using a reporting verb. Every reporting clause contains a reporting verb. For example:

We use verbs of reporting to advise, order, report statements,thoughts, intentions, questions, requests, apologies, manner of speaking and so on.

1. This story is not an indian story. But do you think there are fathers, motherS and grandmothers like the ones portrayed in the story in our own country?

Ans. There is no doubt that the Indian families too have such fathers, mothers and grandmothers. In this world of cut – throat competition everyone aspires for success. So, the parents (father and mother) get employed to provide the children with all the earthly comforts. But they fail to comprehend the psychology of the tiny tots and make them feel isolated. Children need parents’ time and love. They want that parents should interact with them humbly and without hurting their feelings.

2. Was Kezia’s father right to punish her? What kind of a person was he? You might find some of these words useful in describing him:

Ans. No, Kezia’s father did not act wisely. He was unkind and arrogant. Corporal punishment mars the future of the child. It hampers growth and creativity. One should be kind and affectionate while talking to children.

WRITING:

Has your life been different from or similar to that of kezia when yo were a child ? Has your perception about your parents changed now? Do you find any change in your parents ‘ behaviour Vis-a-vis yours? Who has become more understanding? What steps would you like to take to build a relationship based on understanding? Q.1. Why was the little girl afraid of her father? – ছোট মেয়েটি তার বাবাকে ভয় পেত কেন?

Ans. Kezia was a sensitive little girl. She was afraid of her father because of his rude and arrogant behaviour. He never interacted with her politely and humbly. He always kept ordering her to do one thing or the other. He used to beat her also. That is why she was afraid of him.

Q.2. Why did her father intend to punish? – কেন তার বাবা শাস্তি দেবার মনস্থ করেন?

Ans. Kezia’s grandmother asked her to give a birthday present to his father. She made a cushion using some sheets of fine paper which she found on her mother’s bed table. It was an important speech but she tore those pages. So her father intended to punish her.

Ans. She had a nightmare of the butcher with a knife and a rope, who came nearer and nearer, smiling that dreadful smile while she could not move. She stood still and cried, Grandma!

Ans. Kezia had a horrible dream. She got frightened. Her father caught up the child in his arms and lay down beside her. She found that he was harder than Grandmother, but it was a nice hardness. She thought that he was working hard for the family’s comfort. So she changed her opinion about her father.

Q.7. Kezia made a birthday present for her father but it proved to be a disaster for her. How? Explain. – কেজিয়া তার বাবার জন্মদিনে একটি উপহার তৈরি করেছিল কিন্তু তা তার কাছে আকস্মিক দুর্ঘটনা হিসেবে প্রমাণিত  হল । কেমন করে ? বিস্তারিত করো।

Ans. Kezia was a sensitive little girl. Her Grandmother suggested to her to present a pin-cushion as a birthday gift for her father. She found nothing suitable in the house which she could use to make a pin-cushion. So she used her father’s papers to do so. She tore them into pieces and stuffed the cushion with them. When her father didn’t find the papers, she felt very much annoyed. Thus Kezia’s birthday present proved a disaster.

Q. 1. What message does the author wish to convey through Kezia’s story? – কেজিয়ার গল্পের মধ্যে দিয়ে লেখক কী বার্তা দেবার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেছেন?

Ans. Kezia’s story is very touching. It shows that Kezia misinterprets her parents attitude and behaviour because of her innocence. She thinks that her father does not love her. She Concludes that he is rude and arrogant. He punishes her with-a ruler. Moreover, he never plays with her and never spends time with her. But in the end of the story he shows his affection and love towards Kezia when she is in dire need of her father’s protection. He makes her feel comfortable and lays beside her so that she may enjoy sound sleep and she may not feel frightened due to a nightmare. The author intends to say that parents can never go against the children. They persistently strive hard for accumulating wealth to provide all the basic necessities to their wards.

Q.2. That night there was a hue and cry in the house.” Why did her father get agitated? – “সেই রাত্রে বাড়িতে কার পেছনে ধাওয়া করার ব্যাপারে শোরগোল পড়ে গেল ।” কেন তার বাবা উত্তেজিত হলেন?

Ans. One day, when Kezia was kept indoors due to cold, her grandmother suggested her to make a pin-cushion for her father. She stitched three sides of the cushion and went to her mother’s bedroom to look for scraps with which she could fill the cushion. On the bed-table she discovered a great many sheets of fine paper, gathered them up, tore them into tiny pieces and stuffed her case, then sewed up the fourth SIde.

That night there was a hue and cry in the house because those papers were important. It was a great speech for the Port Authority. So her parents were in search of those sheets. This was the reason that her father got agitated and punished her with a ruler.

Q.3. How did the Mcdonald’s family make a difference for Kezia? – ম্যাকডোনাল্ডস পরিবার কেজিয়ার পরিবারের থেকে কেমন আলাদা ছিল? 

Ans. Kezia was a very sensitive child. She got dejected because of her father’s indifference. She needed attention and  affection. The Macdonalds lived next door. They had five children. Looking through a gap in the fence the little girl saw them playıng tag in the evening. The father with the baby, Mao, on hisbshoulders, two little girls hanging on to his coat pockets ran round and round the flower beds, shaking with laughter. Once she saw the boys turn the hose on him-and he tried to catch them laughing all the time. The incident forced her to think that there were different sorts of fathers. She compared her life to the lives of those children and found them fortunate who could spend time with their father.
