Ans: The ‘holy man’ was surprised because Santosh’s mother asked to be blessed with a daughter. People mostly seek blessings for having a son.

2. Give an example to show that even as a young girl Santosh was not ready to accept anything unreasonable. (2)

Ans: As a young girl, Santosh refused to marry and warned her parents that she would never marry if she didn’t get the proper education.

3. Why was Santosh sent to the local school? (3)

Ans: Santosh was sent to the local school with the prevailing customer in the family.

4. When did she leave home for Delhi, and why? (4)

Ans: She left home when she was sixteen. She left home and got admission in a school in Delhi to get the proper education.

Ans: in 1992, she climbed Mount Everest. Her qualities of determination, physical and mental strength impressed her seniors. Her fellow climbers appreciated her concern for others and willingness to work in a team. She saved the life of a fellow climber named Mohan Singh by sharing her oxygen cylinder with him.

3. What shows her concern for the environment?

Ans: As she hoisted the Indian flag, she felt proud to be an Indian. Being an environmentalist, she brought down five hundred kilograms of garbage from the Himalayas.

Ans: No, It is not an easy job to kill a tree, as it has grown strong. It has taken nutrients from the soil and absorbed sunlight, air and water for a long time such that many leaves had grown on it.

2. How has the tree grown to its full size? List the words suggestive of its life and activity.

Ans: The tree has grown by taking nutrition from the soil and absorbing sunlight, air and water. The words suggestive of its life and activity are absorbing, feeding, rising, consuming and sprouting.

3. What is the meaning of “bleeding bark”? What makes it bleed? 

Ans: Bleeding bark” refers to the area on the tree trunk where it has been hit with the axe. According to him a simple stab and chop won’t kill the tree completely, it will wound the tree. 

4. The poet says “No” in the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean by this?

Ans: This means that chopping or hacking couldn’t kill the tree. The tree would grow again and retain its original size. 

5. What is the meaning of “anchoring earth” and “earth cave”?

Ans: The “Earth Cave” means the space which is created on the Earth by uprooting the tree. The power of the tree lies in its roots, it’s the main component of the tree.

Ans: Uprooting a tree is certainly the ultimate step in destroying it. Once the uprooting of the tree takes place, then it’s only a matter of time before the tree dies. No tree on Earth can survive after uprooting.
