Q. 1. Has Lushkoff become a beggar by circumstance or by choice? – লাসকফ কোনো পরিস্থিতিতে না নিজের ইচ্ছায় ভিখারি হয়েছিল?

Ans. Lashoff has become a beggar not by Circumstance but by choice. This is clear in his talk with Sergei. To him he pretends that he can’t get any work.

Q. 2. What reasons does he give to Sergey for his telling lies? – কী কারণে সে সার্গেইকে মিথ্যে কথা বলেছিল?

Ans. Lushkoff told the truth and accepted that he was a liar. Formerly he used to be a singer. He told lies to seek the favour of others. If he had spoken the truth none would have helped him. So, he decided to tell lies.

Q. 3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei? – লাসকফ কি কাজ করতে পছন্দ করত? তাহলে, কেন সে সার্গেই – এর সঙ্গে কাঠ কাটতে চলে গিয়েছিল?

Ans. No, he was not a willing worker. He was too weak to Work. He had lost his strength and stamina due to his habit of drinking and secondly he was a middle aged man.

He agreed to chop wood because of pride and shame and he had been trapped by his own words. So he had no other way except accepting Sergei’s offer.

Q. 4. Sergei says, I am happy that my words have taken effect.” Why does he say so? Is he right in saying so? – সাগেই বলেছেন, আমি খুশি যে আমার কথা তুমি মনে রেখেছ।” কেন তিনি একথা বললেন? এই কথা কি সত্যি?

Ans. Sergei says so because his words are morally good for Lashoff. They change him into a good human being. Lashoff becomes a workers from a beggar. So Sergei helps to change Lashoff into a responsible human being.

Q. 5. Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month. How is h obliged to Sergei for this? – লাসকফ মাসে পঁয়ত্রিশ রুবল রোজগার করে। সে কেমন করে সার্গেই – র কাছে কৃতজ্ঞতা জানিয়েছিল?

Ans. Sergei played very important -role in improving the condition of the beggar. It was because of Sergei that Lashoff could earn thirty five rubles a month. He offered him the job to chop wood at his home. Later on he sent him to one of his friends to do the job of copying. Lashoff was highly obliged to Sergei because now he was a notary because of him.

How can we help beggars/abolish begging? – আমরা কেমন করে ভিখারিদের সাহায্য করতে পারি?

Ans. The whole world is facing the nuisance of begging. The number of beggars 1S increasing day by. day. Beggars can be seen at all public places. Some of the beggars have made it a business. It has become a serious problem. Our society and the government should take necessary steps to solve this problem. Global spread of education is required. 

Our government should pass strict laws against begging. Beggars should be given an opportunity to work. Financial support can be provided to them in order to set up some work. Beggars may be turned into skilled labourers. The government should set up beggar’s home only for the handicapped. Begging is a bad practice and is an impediment in the way of progress. So, we should discourage begging and beggars.

Q. 1. What did the beggar say to Sergei? – ভিখারিটি সার্গেইকে কী বলেছিল?

Ans. The beggar told Sergei that he had an offer of a job in the province of Kaluga. But he had no money to go there. He further said that he felt ashamed of asking. But he did so be cause of adverse circumstances.

Q. 2. What happened when Sergei threatened the beggar? – যখন সার্গেই ভিখারিটিকে ভয় দেখালেন তখন কী হল?

Ans. When Sergei threatened the beggar, the letter exposed himself. He told the reality about his life. He was neither a teacher nor a student. All that was a fiction. He was a singer in a Russian Choir. He had been expelled from the choir for his drinking habits.

Q. 3. Why did Sergei feel a little sorry and ashamed of himself? – সার্গেই কেন নিজের কাছে একটু দুঃখ ও লজ্জা পেলেন?

Ans. Sergei felt a little sorry and ashamed of himself when he realized that he had set such a man to work who’ was spoiled and drunken. He also felt sorry for setting a sick man to work at menial labour in the cold.

Ans. While packing and hauling of the furniture the beggar Pretended to be busy. He shirked work. When he behaved in this way, the carters attacked him with sharp comments. At this the beggar got embarrassed.

Ans. Lushkoff was a middle aged man. His way of begging was different from others. He pretended sometimes to be a teacher and sometimes a student. He belonged to the Russian Choir. He was single. He had been expelled from the group due to his drinking habit. He did not like to work hard as he had lost his strength and stamina. He became a beggar by choice. He was wearing a tattered overcoat and big shoes. There were red spots on his cheeks. He told lies in order to fill his empty belly. If he had told the truth, none would have helped him. He changed his ways and became a notary in the end. Sergei and Olga helped him to improve his condition.

Q. 2. How did Olga change Lushkoff ? – কেমন করে ওলগা লাসকফকে বদলে দিল?

Ans. Lushkoff was a beggar. He pretended to be a teacher and sometimes a student. He used to tell lies and got the people’s support. One day Sergei caught his lie and brought him to his house. He asked him to chop the wood. But Lushkoff did not like to do that job. When Olga saw her she glared at him angrily, She shoved him aside with her elbow. She was in anger and unlocked the shed moving ahead. Olga treated Lushkoff like a son. She kept scolding him for his bad habits. She wanted to improve his condition. She did his work and gave him money. Lushkoff started respecting her. He accepted her advice and became a successful man again.

Q. 3. Draw the character sketch of Sergei. – সার্গেই – এর চরিত্র অঙ্কন করো।

Ans. Sergei was a middle-aged man. He was a lover of humanity. His nature was cooperative. He wanted to help the needy persons. He was intelligent and had the capacity to recognize. He was boastful as well. He caught Lashoff telling lies. He wanted to improve his condition. He asked Lashoff to follow him and took him to his house. He kept Lashoff with him for some time and sent him to a friend for another job. He felt satisfaction by doing deeds of public welfare. In his opinion one must be independent. God has given us all. Why should we not be self-dependent? He helped other people too. It was due to his contribution that Lashoff could become a successful man.

Q. 4. Give a character-sketch of Olga. – ওলগা – র চরিত্র অঙ্কন করো।

Ans. Olga was Sergei’s cook. She was a motherly woman. She acted as a real mother for Lushkoff. Serger put Lushkoff to chop wood in his shed. But he did not do any work. Olga rebuked him. She abused him. She told him that he would go to hell because of his drunkenness. She wept for him. However, She chopped wood for him. But she told Sergei that Lushkoff had chopped that wood for him. Her noble deed brought a change in Lushkoff heart. So Olga’s motherly love, harsh words and Kind deed made Lushkoff a good man again. He himself admitted before Sergei that Olga really had changed his heart. He gave up drinking. He became a working man. He now earned thirty-five roubles a month.

Q. 5. Write down Sergei’s contribution for Lushkoff. – লাসকফের জন্য সার্গেই – এর প্রাপ্য কতটুকু?

Ans. Lushkoff was a beggar. He sought the attention of people by telling lies. Sergei caught the beggar telling lies. He threatened that he would send for the police to arrest him. The beggar now told him the truth. Sergei wanted to change his life. He offered him work at his home. He asked him to chop the wood and paid money in lieu of that work. He handed over Lushkoff to Olga. The time passed, and Sergei realised him unfit for physical work. He sent him to one of his friends to do work of copying. A fter some time he met Lushkoff as a successful man. Lushkoff expressed his sense of gratitude to Sergei and thanked him greatly. In this way Sergei contributed a lot for Lushkoff.

Q. 6. ‘Society has power to reform a man. Elucidate. – ‘একজন মানুষকে নবরূপে গড়তে সমাজের ক্ষমতা আছে।’ ব্যাখ্যা করো।

Ans. Man is a social animal. One becomes antisocial when does not get proper environment. Sometimes circumstances too compel us to choose a wrong path. Man is part and parcel of society. In our society, people from all spheres of life lead their lives peacefully. In the chapter it is the contribution of the society that improved the condition of Lashoff. Good and evil people are always there. There have been great social reformers. They sacrificed their lives for the betterment of humanity. Even in recent times the noble people are involved in the public welfare deeds. They work with the sole motto of reforming those who have deviated from the right path.
